Cybersecurity Isn’t Just for Tech Experts — It’s for You
Every click, tap, and swipe you make online can either protect or expose your personal data. Cybersecurity isn’t just a job for IT professionals — it’s a shared responsibility. Whether you're building credit, seeking financial independence, or supporting a growing family, your digital safety matters. And UFCU is here to help.
The Challenge: Why You’re a Target
Cyber threats are evolving fast. In recent years, tens of thousands of vulnerabilities have been disclosed globally. Hackers are targeting individuals more than ever — especially through mobile apps, online banking, and social media. Families and young adults are particularly vulnerable to scams, identity theft, and phishing attacks.
8 Ways You Can Strengthen Your Cybersecurity Protection
Follow these eight tips consistently and you’ll be on your way to truly understanding cybersecurity, and maybe if you’re lucky, achieving cybersecurity heroism.
1. Update Your Devices — Don’t Delay
Outdated software is a hacker’s playground. Enable automatic updates on your phone, tablet, and computer to patch security holes quickly. Use the UFCU Mobile Banking app, which is regularly updated with the latest security features.
2. Avoid Public WiFi for Financial Transactions
Free WiFi at coffee shops or airports may be convenient — but it’s risky. Hackers can intercept your data on unsecured networks. Use a VPN or your mobile data when accessing sensitive accounts.
3. Think Before You Click
According to Gartner1, more than 90% of cyberattacks start with phishing emails. If an email or text asks for your login info or card number, delete it. As a reminder, here at UFCU, we will never ask for your credentials via email. Always type UFCU.org directly into your browser.
4. Be Cautious with Online Relationships
Scammers often pose as romantic interests or employers. If someone you’ve never met asks for money or account access, it’s a red flag. UFCU’s Asset Protection Team helps Members recover from scams. Don’t hesitate to reach out.
5. Monitor Your Accounts Regularly
Check your UFCU accounts often for suspicious activity. If something looks off, report it immediately. You can use the CardKeeper™ feature in the UFCU Mobile app to disable your debit card instantly if it’s lost or stolen. Download the UFCU Mobile app, if you haven’t already. From time to time, remember to review and confirm your authorized devices and trusted browsers within your UFCU Online Banking Profile Settings.
6. Teach Yourself (and Your Family) Cyber Hygiene
Kids and teens are online more than ever. Talk to them about strong passwords, safe browsing, and the dangers of oversharing.
7. Watch Out for Malicious QR Codes
QR codes are handy, but they can be dangerous. Scammers may place fake codes on posters, emails, or packaging to trick you into visiting harmful sites. Always verify the source before scanning.
8. Stay Ahead of AI-Powered Scams
AI phishing uses personal data to craft convincing fake messages. These scams are harder to spot and are more successful every day. Limit what you share online, verify messages, and enable multi-factor authentication.
